Thoughts
It's Tuesday and it still hurts.
I'm not sure this one is going anywhere for a while. So many things stink. They choked. They lost to the Phillies, a team that they only had to beat once in seven games to win the division. They did all of this on our home field.
I think Gary summed it up nicely. This is the first time since 1988 that the Mets were supposed to win and didn't. We were finally the favorite. This never used to be the case back when we were the Muts. It was always the Braves.

Everyone is sitting here talking about what went wrong or whose fault it was or what we should do for next year. Unfortunately, there's no correct answer.
What we just witnessed was freakish. It was the meltdown of all meltdowns and truth is, there is no real explanation for it.
But that's not good enough for us over-analytical New Yorkers. We need answers and we need blood.
We blame Willie for not being tough enough. We blame Jose reyes for not being serious enough. We blame Beltran for not being emotional enough. We blame Wagner for not keeping his mouth shut. We blame the pitching staff for not pitching. We blame the lineup for not hitting. We blame Minaya for trading (giving) away Matt Lindstrom, Heath Bell and Brian Bannister.

When things are bad we New Yorkers over-analyze.
When things are good we New Yorkers over-analyze.
Which is why the joy and the pain are always greater in the city that never sleeps.
Mike and the Mad Dog are calling for a major make over. I'm sure Kevin Kernan is saying something really dumb too. But the truth is, if you were to play this season 100 times, the Mets would win the division 95 times. They were the best team. They simply choked.
Going into next season, we don't need a hell of a lot. Put this same team on the field in '08 and I think they win the division. But there is no chance that that will happen. The greater force that is New York won't let it.
Which is why I think the Mets will fire Willie Randolph.

New Yorkers need something now to stop the bleeding. A public apology/excuse for went wrong. To let Glavine go at this point when the rotation is already thin and the free agent prospects are even thinner would be plain foolish. Sure, he had a bad couple of starts, but he's a dependable 13-15 win starter and those aren't exactly floating around baseball.
The only real option is Willie. Blame Willie. Who knows if its the right answer or the wrong answer. But its an answer.
And if Willie is fired then New Yorkers can look back on this season and have someone to blame. And we need that. It's not rational and not necessarily right. But it is just the way we tick. Cause it's not our fault as the fans. We spend our time and a ton of money to support this team. We are there through the think and thin. And we won't take what we just saw.

I hear you that there should definitely be a lot of changes, but I don't think they will fire Willie. Who would replace him? Joe Girardi maybe? Not that that would be too bad, maybe they need more emotion, but I just don't see it happening.
Willie has always been the same way....He always looks like he does not speak english. AFor people to get upset with him now AND fire him because of it is dumb. He did not alter his style...His team of grown men played like deaf mutes. He deserves blame but not even half of it all.
Can you imagine how the fans would treat Glavine if the Mets bring him back in '08?
By the way, Kaz Matsui is going to play in the playoffs.
what i was trying to say is that i dont think there should be a lot of changes, but that new york demands it.
We'll see what happens. This team is pretty set every except for a few rotation spots, 2b, and in the pen.
So not a lot to be done.
Still curious.
I thought about posting this yesterday, and now it's confirmed:
Peterson has to be the one to go.
He ran Heath Bell and Royce Ring out of town for nothing because he didn't like the way they pitched. Well, Heath Bell was precisely what the pen needed this year. And Ring was $12 million cheaper than Steroids Schoeneweis.
This, of course, ignores the fact that Victor Zambrano was just waived for the third time since the Mets traded for him.
I think Castillo was a good addition to the team. His body looks permanently broken, yes, but I think he's a good guy to have in the second spot. That said, you can't bring him back and have another singles-only hitter (like Lo Duca) in the lineup. Not sure how much I'd want to spend to keep him (I'm thinking years more than dollars), but provided it's nothing outrageous I think we could be set at 2B.
With that in mind, and with Young Lastings set to occupy RF next year, I think our primary areas of need (among position players) are LF and C. I'm for bringing Alou back; yes, he's bound to get injured, but he's also bound to hit when he's in there, and I wouldn't consider it the end of the world to go a decent stretch with Gomez or some utility outfielder manning left.
Catcher is tricky; I have no idea who's available or who we would even want. Can you go with Blastro as your starting catcher? Maybe.
None of this touches the disastrous relief pitching situation. In the rotation you've got 4 locks in Pedro, Maine, Ollie, and El Duque (signed for another year, remember). It's really not a bad rotation, but what it lacks, and what it's been lacking, is a true ace. As good as Pedro is, he's not an 8-inning threat every time out. You count on him for 6 solid innings and anything more is gravy. We need the shut-down workhorse type. Johan Santana anyone? (Sorry Frenchman).
I've said this before, I will say it again - If you want Santana, it will cost you Maine, Milledge, Gomez and Humber.
Omar sez Willie to return in 2008, so that's settled.
Alou has said that if they offer his option, he'll take it for '08, so that's settled IMO. Also, in addition to Glass's Gomez situation, there is also Mr. Endy, no? And, let's hope, a bit more from Ben Johnson than we got in 07.
Catcher is a big question mark. Reportedly the Tigres aren't taking back Pudge, so that's there, if you want a complete juicer battery of Schoeneweis and Pudge or something. Ramon Hernandez reportedly wants out of Bodymore (Murdaland), so that's a possibility. And Lo Duca, for cheap, if possible, w/Castro again might work. Who knows.
Go Mets in 08.
PS Nice umpiring work yet again last night by McClelland and co. What a joke it's been all year long. The Padres season ended on a terrible call, and what else can you say is to be expected at this point?
Sippy. Sippy sippy sippy. I couldn't disagree more. For one, although they just announced Willie will be the 08 Mets mgr, I didn't believe for a second that he would be let go. THat would be an admission that he was the wrong guy for the job after all and since Omar was given "full autonomy" Omar has basically gone out and said - we are going to win this thing with Willie at the helm. Classy? Sure? Misguided, a little. But I can deal. I surely don't give Willie ALL of the blame for things going wrong, but people are willing to anoint him a saint when things are good. There needs to be balance.
As for Tom Glavine, he needs to be run out of town immediately if not sooner. I remarked this to AFOMG yesterday, that in the movie MR 3000 with Bernie Mac, he basically got his 3000th hit and retired on the spot. Though Glavine didn't retire right after 300, it was obvious that was the only reason he stayed in, so he could be Mr 300, and he could certainly pull 10 wins out of his a$$. Face it, none of us wanted him here to begin with and now all of a sudden we are waxing nostalgic for a guy who's good days are way behind him? GONE.
From my perspective, the team needs to get younger. If Omar is truly committed to the growth and development of young guys, then we need to not give Willie the choice of a "proven vet" (think Castillo, who I like a lot actually but don't think he'll be back, Heilman, Mota, Schoe, Green, etc) over young guy (Gotay, HUmber, Pelf in the pen, Stings, etc). The dead weight in the form of aging broken down vets needs to go. I might be inclined to keep Alou simply b/c I love him but in spirit of this, let him walk.
Miss me guys? LOL
FUCK YOU BITCH we actually mad the playoffs BUDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
FUCK U YANKEES are WAY better then the mets
