A Word on Content

There's been some grumbling on the comment board recently about the content here at Y2K. Patrick, Open Bar, a slew of Johnny Anonymouses, etc. are basically alleging that the Y2K boys have gone soft. Not enough Yankee bashing, too much on the Mets, that kind of thing.

We aim to please here at the site. We love our readers, even the ones who don't love us that much (unclesam, wouldn't be the same with you, pal -- but why don't you put a space between "uncle" and "sam"? What's with that?). The fact is that detractors keep us honest, and even if their arguments are sometimes inane, more often than not they give us something to think about, even if we disagree.

But a word on content: the content here at the site comes from the minds of the writers. Sometimes that means a Yankee-bashing piece, sometimes that means a Mets-loving piece, and yes, sometimes that means getting the latest update on Sip's random encounters with Eric Byrnes.

I tend to think we do a good job of mixing it all together (it's somewhat ironic that the piece that launched this whole discussion was a piece bashing the shit out of A-Rod), but believe me, we hear you out there who want more of the Yankee hate.

But look, these things have to happen organically. When you write a piece because it's what you're "supposed" to do rather than because it's what you're really interested in writing, the piece is going to be shit.

At that point it becomes work, and it's going to sound like work. Now I'm not saying that everything we write when our hearts are in it is gold, but I promise you it's better than if we wrote pieces of a certain type because we felt we had to.

For those of you who want the Yankee hate, be patient. We've got an exciting summer of Yankee hating ahead of us. I'm going to the Red Sox-Yankees game at Fenway on Saturday, and I'm sure I'll have a well of material after that one.

Speaking more generally, the Yanks are bad this year, and it's not just biased bloggers who are saying it anymore.

The Daily News interviewed a big league scout for an article today, and he's saying the same things we are. He called Abreu "a piece of garbage", says "I don't think they'll pull out of this... I don't think there are enough players on this club to do it." Articles like this put a huge smile on the Glass Man's face.

But on a given day, that smile may not be the thing I'm most excited about. Maybe it's another gem from El Duque. Maybe it's Carlos Delgado with a break-out game. Maybe it's an injury to Mike Hampton. Could be anything. And whatever it is, that's what you get. And that's the way it is.

As regards the Yankee ads that run on the site, we agree, that's a TON of salt. We can't control that though, Google assigns the ads to us due to word cues, and every day the word "Yankees" appears right on the mast head, so it leads to ads for "Derek Jeter's Driven", "Roger Clemens jerseys" and "Selling your soul".

The Official Band of Y2K Just Got Cooler

Our buddies over at The Strokes launched a new web site this past week. You're not a Strokes fan, you say? Why should I care, you ask?

Check out the "Talk" page on the webe site -- does that logo look familiar to you? It sure does to me -- a Mets logo with "The Strokes" etched on top.

And how about the "Live Chat" icon? A picture of A-Rod's face getting slammed in by Jason Varitek.

Talk about things that bring a smile to my face -- well done, boys, cheers.

Have a nice weekend everybody. Let's go Mets, and fuck the Yankees. I'm already on the hook (a big hook?) for saying they don't have a chance at winning the division this year, and another series loss against the Sox would go a long way toward proving me right.

Cheers, Patrick, no hard feelings.

Incidentally, I hope that didn't sound too preachy. Just thought I'd offer a little insight into how we do things around here.

I can't believe there's a content controversy. You guys keep crankin' it out, I'll keep reading it. Sure, I'll comment, but complain? Unless this site is generating the big bucks for you (and I hope it does one day), then post what you feel.

As far as the Yankee bashing goes, hey, it's not as much fun to kick a team when they're down (still fun, though). It's hard to rag on them over JP and DM at first because they're pretty much as advertised. Damon hurt? Giambi talkin' steroids and hurt? A-Rod alienating himself some more? No surprises anywhere. And is it worth talking about how much Cano sucks at second? Or what's going on with Melky? Or the rookie starters?

As far as A.F.O.M.G. being on the "no chance at the division" hook, the record for division comebacks is 14, set by the '78 Yanks, overcoming the BoSox. Of course, that team was 6 games over .500 when they were at their lowest point. No way they had to leapfrog over 2 teams (and sidestep 1) just to be in a position to take the crown. I'd say you're not on the hook, and if you wind up eating crow in the end, I'll help you polish off the bird. They're down 13.5 right now, 14.5 the other day, it would be a comeback of historic proportions - it's not happening. Clemens 07 ain't Guidry 78, Mariano can't bring it any more like the Goose could (and he could), and Mr. October is not DHing and batting cleanup.

Wildcard? Sure, it's doable, 7.5 back. They only need to pass 7 other teams... first, they might want to shake those pesky D-Rays and get out of the cellar. Then, .500 might be nice. As Yogi said, "Sometimes it gets late early". Welcome to 2007.

Back to A-Rod for a moment. A good lesson as to why it usually pays to leave something on the table. I think it's pretty much this simple: the guy who pisses everyone off by getting paid twice as much as his peers is going to be subjected to intense scrutiny and held to a different standard. Law of the universe. A-Rod has demonstrated, repeatedly, that he can't take the scrutiny. Well, it's too late to give back the money, so tough shit. Next time take the standard 10 or 15 million per year and everyone will leave you alone.

I hate to give Steve Phillips any credit for anything, and at the time I thought he was way out of line unloading on A-Rod the way he did when he broke off negotiations -- but is it possible he was ahead of the curve and invoked the no-assholes rule back in 2001 or whenever it was?

I'll take whatever content you deem fit to present me with. I've got my own article about the Yankees, and a curse in the works myself.

Hound just passed Sip SR. in the Sippy Momo's top 10 fathers in Blogging.

You remind me of Sammy L in Pulp Fiction. Just a badass mother fucker.

I kind of agree with you on the Steve Phillips point.

As for Phillips. What happens if Bobby Alomar isnt the biggest bust of all time?

While what Mets Fan since '75 said about it not being as fun to kick the yanks when they're down may be true, I still think they fully deserve it. It is harder to them when they're doing as badly as they are now, but all true Mets fans should have an incredibly deep well of stored-up hating to use at points like these. By all means, stomp on them while they're down.

And Sip, Ben, and AFOMG -- I didn't mean to bash your content decisions at all. I still read every day. I just thought that for a while there, the yankee-hating seemed to dip, and there even seemed to be a bit of praise for them sprinkled in. One of the main things I love about the site is how you guys shape your hate into really interesting posts, so I guess I've just been missing that is all.

Keep up the good work, I'll keep reading.

Yankee bashing has to come organically? Where have you been for the last ten years? Yankee fans have been bashing me for being a Mets fan every single day. It's constant, never-ending Mets bashing.

"The Yankees took a loss last night huh?"

"Yeah, well it's better than the Mets. What are you guys doing? Racing to last place? Ha ha! Mets suck! Get a real team!"

I grew up in the 80's and as a result became a Mets fan. I had no problem with the Yankees other than my stepfather teaching me about his years in Brooklyn and what they did to the Dodgers. It wasn't until the last ten years that I felt the true obnoxious side of the Yankee fans. Then I saw the team run like a business instead of a sports team. (if we pay for a championship team then why aren't we getting results?) The Yankees and their fans are terrible and hating them is easy for me. After all the ridicule the Yankee fans have given us over the years you need to organically hate them? Collapsing the way they are you still look towards a bright future instead of kicking the bastards when they're down? Yankee fans didn't care if the Mets were in last place the year after the World Series, they gave me tons of shit and they kick hard when you're down.

No hard feelings but I just felt like someone in my own family was stabbing me in the back. When a Mets fan becomes a Yankee fan a piece of my heart dies. I don't want to read the Daily News call Abreu a piece of garbage, I just want to hear you call him that. Is that so wrong?
