...
I went to my favorite local shithole actively seeking further depression and other people's misery.
I didn't get enough of either so I retreated home.
It is 1:26 AM and with every minute that passes it hits me more.
With all my heart I didn't see this coming. That is what makes it so much worse.
To lose they way we did tonight is the ultimate slap to the balls. Aaron Heilman, maybe the stingiest reliever in the postseason, hung one pitch.
It kills me that he is the goat. He deserves so much more.
Then, we all said that it could still happen. Then we had 2 on and no out. It had to happen.
This was our magic. This is why we are Mets fans.
But the magic never came.
Baseball is a tricky game. An inch here or a step there and the result of this game could be much different.
I am going to rap it up there. We all saw what happened and there isn't much reason to talk about it.
2006 was an amazing run. Unfortunately it ended too soon.
The only thing that is keeping me going is a challenge I made to Steamin Mikey Lehman over the recent jacked up beers we had on Amsterdam Ave.
That is, I want to go as long as humanly possible without knowing who won the world series.
I won't watch sportscenter, read the post or even scratch my balls the wrong way.
I just don't want to know.
To AFOMG, Cousin, Cousin Dan, Happy Will, Goat, Robbie X, Joel and all the rest of you: I only hope that the ride home from Shea was as quick as possible. I can only think back to the ride home after Game 5 in 2000. The worst 40 minutes of my life.
You all know how I feel about the community that we all share.
For all of us, I am really sad.
We all put in so much to this team to come up so short. It really hurts. I don't know what else to say.
We all need to do what we gotta do.
Grab a bottle of liquor or whatever it is that makes you feel your worst and darkest.
For me, it will be coldplay and whiskey.
Do what you can.
This is tough.
Our time will come soon enough.
Vaya con dios,
Sip

Hey guys - thanks for taking the time every day to make this site available. You do a great job and it brings together a community of fans who might otherwise never meet. I couldn't have imagined a more exciting, wonderful seven months than what the Mets just gave us. What great memories, what a bright future. The only thing that saddens me is that Jose Reyes will not be leading off tonight or tomorrow night or the next. I won't get to see Willie's Met wrist watch for a while. But, hey, that's the deal. The season can't go on forever: after all, it's not the NHL.
I hope we can all go to Opening Day together in a big Upper Deck block next year - like a reunion or something. This is a Met family.
Less than 162 days until Opening Day...
Tigers in 3.
Echoin Listers Sentiments, Young Sip, AFOMG, and more recently Cheddar Ben, thanks for the season. From tailgating openin day with Sip, AFOMG, to easter at Shea with J Schubes and only jews in flushing, to my bday with GOAT and Shaun Green jr, watchin them shit on the ugliest man in america, Big Unit, Shea provided great memories this season. Yeah, yesterday was painful. Very painful. But, runnin into Happy Will still half heartingly smiling and Cheddar giving me a manly hug, as I was about to get on the 7, put the season in its proper place. The Mets are about the fans.
...And I am still grateful that I am not a Yankee fan.
Lister's suggestion was a good one. How about we get 4,5 games next spring/ summer; make a bunch of foolish signs and use those "hello , my name is' sticker/tags ....
I think next year, we need to organize a group outing to the Pepsi picnic area. Our day will come one day, right now though, I'm still numb.
I wish there were games as good as baseball games to look forward to over the next 5 months, but the fact is there aren't any. They don't exist.
As Nails' personal hero George Will famously wrote, "Baseball, it is said, is only a game. True. And the Grand Canyon is only a hole in Arizona. Not all holes, or games, are created equal."
Not all seasons are created equal either, and for me personally that was the greatest and happiest run I've ever experienced with any team in any sport at any time.
the mets need to bring up eli friedman. this kid dominated the 15U cedar baseball tourney since he was 12. imagine him pitching in the 9th instead of heilman...what could have been
Great first year, guys.
In some small way, and among a select few, 2006 will be remembered as the Year of Y2K.
Looking forward to next year - only then will I get over this.
Regarding Last night :
Crushing. And therefore I'm crushed. But it's Game 2 that gnaws at me.
A little history lesson:
1983 Mets battle Cubs for 5th, lose by 3
1984 Mets battle Cubs for 1st, lose by 6.5
1985 Mets battle Cards for 1st, lose by 3
It's rare to get to the top of the mountain on your first shot. That's what this was, against a team that's been there the last few years. And, late in the season, Omar said "We're ahead of schedule". We all know he's got his to-do list in order.
Things that made 2006 great:
A leadoff hitter unseen since Rickey, but with personality.
All-Stars, baby!
The Braves are no longer an issue.
'Los earning his money, and then some.
Endy with a catch for the ages (I thought that destiny had officially pointed toward the first base dugout).
And, of course, the day when I typed "Yankee curse" into Google. My favorite put-down to Yankee fans has been "26 WS, 39 pennants, Donnie Baseball was 2-3. No rings or Hall for Mattingly.", and I felt that, as long as he was in uniform (coaching since 2004) they would not win a championship. That thought, and wondering if anyone else had any curse theories, lead me here. I consider coming to this site to be "going for a mental beer", breaking up the work day with opinions, insights, and laughs. And I'll be here every day, checking out what our standard-bearers have to say. Keep up the outstanding work!
F-it man, maybe I'm too happy but win or lose, there's something that makes being a Mets fan an experience I wouldn't trade for anything. If Cousin wants to know the real truth, the smile that emerged on my face on the platform of the 7 before that lonely ride home was only because I saw him, knew that being a Met fan meant something and that one day, we'll all get to celebrate together.
